Hebrews 13:2 “Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it! “
One of the reasons that my home is part of my blessed life is the kitchen. It is not massive, actually our home is not that big, but it has lots of cupboard space, an island and allows me to make and bake all kinds of yummy foods. I belong to a social media group, that it’s primary purpose is to spread kindness!! What a great concept, eh? People post kind things that have happened to them around town. Occasionally, someone will post that they are looking for something or ask for recommendation on a service. I have no idea if the creator of the page realized how the idea lines up so much with the Biblical scripture above, in that it reminds us to be hospitable(kind) to strangers. It really helps to brighten my social media feed.
Last week a lady had posted that she was looking for a place to purchase homemade soup, as the place she usually buys from is not making soup due to covid 19. I seen that we had a mutual friend that attends my church so I stepped a little bit out of my comfort zone and messaged her. I offered to make and bring to her some soup. She was so happy and so was I. We got to text talking afterwards and shared some of who we are and where we are in life. She is younger then me and parts of our life journey are very similar, so I was hopefully able to encourage her and let her know that I was willing to be there for her, if she needed it . I know she encouraged me to keep using my God given talent of cooking and to connect with others.
The following week I came upon the above scripture, and started to think. I am confident that this young lady is not an actual angel. But maybe what I did, entertained an angel? Part of the Dictionary definition of entertain is ” to hold the attention of pleasantly or agreeable;divert; amuse. to have as a guest.” What a wonderful thought. That is a Biblically sound thought. The Bible tells us that God’s Angels have some very important roles. The word Angel means “messenger of God” They are called mighty one’s who do God’s work. They battle satan, they bring us messages from God, they patrol the earth as God’s representatives, they act with authority, they bring revelation, warnings. instructions, provide physical provisions, assist in answering prayers, give encouragement, come at important times and some continually praise God. They are not our friends or relatives who have died. They were made as Angels and will always be angels. But we may entertain them. The vision I got in my head was of one of the Angels who patrols the earth, seeing me preparing and give soup to the young lady, and it caught the angel’s attention. It stopped him from patrolling. He watched and was entertained!! Then I though of when I have been watching something that I find entertaining, I share it with my friends. If they are around I call them to come and see with me. Maybe the Angel that took notice and stopped called other Angels to come and watch it with me. A group of Angels, watching what I was doing, being entertained!! Also I thought of when I have watched a really good movie, how later I talk about it with my friends and encourage them to check it. What if the angel who was entertained by my simple act, goes and talks about with other Angels, and with God? Saying something like, Today while I was patrolling the earth I was stopped and took interest in Angelina’s act of making soup to give to this young lady and encourage her. It was so entertaining to see the thought and care that she put into making the soup, to please a stranger. You should have seen it!, next time you are out patrolling the earth you should go and see what she is up to. God, that was pretty cool how Angelina made that soup, and used one of the talents you gave her to bless another, eh? I know this may not be true, but it could be! The above scripture says that we may entertain Angels and not even know it.
I want to entertain Angels, I want to grab their attention and maybe one day unlike this time the stranger could actually be an Angel. Even if none of this happens I know I am doing what God wants and He is watching, and it makes me feel good to share with others. Therefore, “Don’t FORGET to show hospitality to strangers,”
